Huskies Advance to OMHA Round #3
submitted by team reporter Albert Ross

The Re/Max Twin City Peewee AE Huskies never looked better as they hosted the Caledonia Thunder on Tuesday January 24 for game 3 of their play-down series.  With a series lead of 3 points to 1, the Dogs were determined to maintain momentum and judging from the results, their resolve paid handsome dividends. Play had barely begun when the Huskies registered their first goal.

Defencemen Dale Jurica and Joel Domm got the puck in deep to Nathan Gerber who circled the net and secured a wrap-around with less than a minute elapsed. The ensuing puck possession plays kept the Thunder off balance for much of the period allowing the Huskies to up the ante. Jack Normandeau went to his back-hand to defeat the Caledonia net-minder on some nice team-play from Nathan Gerber and Alex Smirnow. The Thunder were able to get just two shots on Tyler Kumpf the entire period and he handled them with little trouble. It was more Husky pressure in the second as the Thunder collapsed into their zone. Emmet Latyn  tallied on a beautiful pass into the slot from Nathan Gerber with Ethan Field getting the second assist. If the pressure was bad for the Thunder in the first two periods, it was positively overwhelming in the third as the Huskies went to full throttle. Dawson Hussey on a feed from Latyn took it all the way up ice to notch the fourth Husky goal. His example was followed moments later by Nathan Gerber, whose daring dangle, had the same result. Normandeau gets the assist on Nathan’s play. The reeling opposition answered with their only point at the half with a wildly bouncing puck finding the mark. The Huskies immediately regrouped and returned to the offensive. Again it was Normandeau and Nathan Gerber getting puck possession and feeding it back to the point that resulted in the next Husky goal. Owen Ross shot the puck along the deck to defeat the screened goalie when it went off a defenders skate. Some ensuing hard-hitting defensive work would see Ross sidelined for the remainder of the game and the next game as well with a minor injury he incurred in the dying minutes. The final Husky point was notched by, Latyn on a short-angled shot. Field and Hussey collect the helpers on the power-play to exact a 7 – 1 win on the night. It was a commanding performance the Dogs hoped to repeat in Caledonia Thursday night and conclude the series. Once again, the Huskies were first on the score sheet. Normandeau made the most of a turnover and raced for the opposing net to draw first blood. The Thunder, growing desperate, answered early in the second to re-tie the match before Jackson Holmes closed the door for good. Normandeau pounded in a second goal getting help from team captain Gerber to re-establish the lead. The Pack hit their stride in the third as the Thunder took 4 penalties and collapsed. Normandeau secured a hat-trick on the power-play with Nathan Gerber and Smirnow getting the helpers. The hot line drove the final nail in with Nathan Gerber sealing the 4 – 1 decision with Normandeau and Smirnow getting the assisting credits. It was an incredible 4 game series that saw the Huskies tally 16 goals for and give up 5 to take the win and move on to the third round where they will face the Paris Wolf Pack.
