Novice A Huskies Capture Regional Silver Stick Title
This past weekend the Novice A Huskies travelled to Brampton to take part in the 41st Annual International Silver Stick Tournament - Brampton Regional.  Competing against a small field of four other regional teams, the Huskies battled through some difficult games to bring the banner back to New Hamburg.

They opened play on Friday with contests against division rivals from
Georgetown and Oakville.  When the boys took the ice for the morning
session against Georgetown, they did so to a chorus of "Husky
Slappies" (new Husky-logo'ed noise makers).  Those slappies got a workout
all game long as the Huskies cruised to an 8-0 victory.  This effort was
highlighted by the defensive pairings of Eric Armstrong & Cohen VanZuilen
as well as Jordyn Ertel & Beau Akey who limited the Raiders' opportunities.
The forward line of Tate Brenner, Ben Domm, and Josh Soulliere shined on
offense to help put the game away early.

In the afternoon, the Huskies took the ice against Oakville - a team that
defeated New Hamburg in their last meeting.  After two tough periods, the
Huskies found themselves trailing 1-0.  However, the third period is often
this group's time.  Led by the line of Mitchell Wilhelm, Hayden Lewis, and
Ayden Norley, the Huskies found the net four times in the final frame to
defeat the Rangers.

After a good night's sleep, the Huskies returned for Saturday matches
against Erindale and hosts Brampton.  The forward line of Owen Bruder,
Keegan Metcalf, and William Austin provided the team with an early lead
against Erindale and they did not look back.  When the final buzzer
sounded, the Huskies had earned a 9-0 win and had clinched a spot in
Sunday's final.  The boys completed their round robin against the Brampton
45's.  Brampton played hard throughout the game, but Husky goaltender Jacob
Durrer was stingy.  He kept the Huskies in the game and helped the boys
earn a 2-2 tie which gave them the top seed for the final which would be a
rematch against the host team and rivals from Brampton.

On Sunday, the boys were fired-up.  Just like their banner reads, these
boys clearly "want the Silver Stick".  After a great rendition of Oh
Canada, the puck dropped and the final game was underway.  Both teams were
on their games.  It wasn't until late in the first period that the Huskies
got the ice-breaker on a shorthanded goal by Owen Bruder.  The Huskies
would get plenty of shorthanded chances in this contest.  But, in a 1:52
stretch of the third period, two goals by the 45's sandwiched a second
shorthanded tally by Bruder.  This left the game even at 2-2.  The final
11:41 of the match would go scoreless, sending it to sudden death.  Once
again it was Bruder.  2:37 into overtime, he worked himself into a shooting
position.  As he loaded-up his left-handed wrist shot, he took one final
glance at his target, and proceeded to fire that wrister into the roof of
the net.

For the third consecutive time the tournament ended with Husky gloves and
sticks littering the ice.  The boys and their siblings marvelled as the
Husky mascot (special thanks to Josslin Insurance) made his first
appearance for the Novice As.  After a short on-ice Husky family
celebration, the Huskies turned their attention to the International Silver
Stick Finals in St. Clair Shores, Michigan where they will compete Jan. 25
- 27.
