Huskies Prevail in OT
(by team reporter Albert Ross)

The Canadian Legion Major Peewee A Huskies played host to the Georgetown Raiders in what became a grueling contest of wills on January 24. The Dogs were looking for a win to solidify their point-leader status in the opening round-robin action while the visitors were desperate for a win to stay alive.

The first break came when the Raiders incurred a minor head-contact penalty that the Huskies used to the utmost. Danny O’Connell got the puck in deep and cycled it to line-mate Jackson Normandeau who in turn fed it across the crease. Tim Wenn roofed it with a backhand shot to open the scoring on the power-play. The Raiders continued to struggle as they incurred a major penalty but the tough physical play kept the Huskies at bay as the period ended. The parade to penalty box continued in the second but this time the offenders wore Huskies logos. It was a deal-breaker for the Dogs when <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Georgetown found the back of the net in a 5 on 3 power-play that re-established the stalemate. The remainder of the period and much of the third saw fierce battles along the boards where the grinders and diggers of the Husky lineup found their calling. Owen Ross, Wyatt Rempel, Greg Yeoman and Joel Domm were all working hard at blunting the worst Georgetown thrusts and were instrumental in wearing down the attackers. Net minder Colton Holba did not get many shots due to the solid Husky defense but the few that came his way, he turned aside, buying his team time to find a way to win. Wenn nearly did so halfway though the third when his breakaway nearly registered. The match remained deadlocked at the buzzer so overtime action commenced. It was more trench warfare grinding and digging but it was clear the Dogs were the stronger team as exhaustion started to take it’s toll on the visitors. It looked like the match would end in a draw as the Raider goalie was denying some solid chances but the finisher came with 2 minutes remaining. Sam Miller scooped the puck and passed it out front where Jackson Gerber plowed it in to take the 2 – 1 win. Wenn gets the TLC Pet Food Player of the game for his outstanding work ethic during the game while his team notched another 2 points for the play-down win. This puts the Huskies in the drivers seat in their 3-team pool with 7 points. They hope to add to this total next week as they dual with both Georgetown and Woolwich to conclude the series.
