Minor Peewees End Busy Week on High
The Bayshore Community Centre, home of the 2010-2011 OHL Champion Owen Sound Attack, was the stage for the first of four games on the New Hamburg Minor Peewee A Huskies schedule which began on Oct 6. The Re/Max Twin City Huskies got into penalty trouble early and if not for some superb penalty killing by CJ Egli and Aedan Bell the game could have had detrimental consequences. Although their efforts in the offensive zone weren’t rewarded on the PK, it was at 13:38 of the third period that they connected for the game winning goal when Egli spotted Bell in the slot.

Jake Schweitzer provided an insurance marker late in the contest on an individual effort wrapping in the goal after he stripped the Owen Sound goalie of the puck to cap the 2-0 win. Kyle Goodhew had a solid game on defense with a number of rushes and shots from the point. “I just played my game” said Goodhew. Asked about the shut out, Huskie goalie Mavrick Habel thought “it was good. I wasn’t thinking anything, just save the puck and we’re good” he said. Assistant coach Chip Seiling “thought we played well. We were really seeing the ice” he remarked. “if we could only score more. Lots of shots were at the chest” he added.

Seiling got his wish the next day when the Huskies returned to the dog pound to host the Guelph Storm where the dogs had the power play clicking. Three of the goals scored in the 5-0 romp were with the man advantage. After a scoreless first, the Huskies were able to net two PP goals in the second. Bell scored first at 11:06, then Jacob Ertel on a tic tac toe play from Kyle Green and Bell gave the fans some excitement.

Early in the third Griffin Hergott, again on the PP, scored his first of two in a row. He would score again with 3:54 left in the game assisted by Ertel. Cam Lowry rounded out the scoring on a nice tip in with Ertel and Goodhew earning the helpers. With his second shutout of the season, Sam Dramnitzke was solid when called upon in the New Hamburg net and thought his personal and team play was exceptional. “Played good. D helped out covering all the people so I didn’t get many quality shots” he thought.

The busy week continued on Oct 12 as the Huskies travelled to Oakville to face their stiffest competition to date versus the Rangers. After exchanging power plays most of the first frame, the dogs could smell blood at 3:16 of the first; the Huskies were awarded a 5 on 3 PP to work with. It took only eight seconds but it was the Rangers who tallied as they caught the Huskie defense napping. The Huskies gained some redemption though twelve seconds later when Schweitzer fed a perfect pass in the slot to Luke Egers who made no mistake firing a sweet shot to the far side to tie it up.

Oakville would score early in the third, shorthanded again, to take the lead for good and cap a 3-1 win as they scored an empty net goal late. “(We didn’t have) a ton of scoring chances. We didn’t shoot to score” a diplomatic head coach Kory Green said after the game.”We shot when we should have passed and passed when we should have shot” he continued. On both Ranger goals he thought the Huskie defense could have been stronger. “(An attempted) stick check on their first goal (and) a pass up the middle (on the other).”

The team didn’t have much time to think about their first regular season loss as they continued on their two game road trip the next day in Caledon. The Huskies seemed much more focused for sure skating to a 5-0 victory. Kyle Green led the way scoring two goals. One he put top shelf where the peanut butter is kept on a beautiful shot. Koby Seiling also hit the score sheet with a goal on the night. Hergott and Ertel rounded out the scoring while Habel earned his second shutout of the regular season.
