Huskies Clinch First Place
(by team reporter Albert Ross)

The EJ’s Bantam Husky AEs began the new year by clinching first place in their division at the end of regular season, giving them a top seed position when OMHA play-downs begin. To do it, they needed to win one of their two remaining regular season games and the Woolwich Wildcats provided that opportunity on January 2 when they hosted the Huskies in St. Jacobs.

The Dogs got off to a good start and registered two unanswered goals by the end of the first frame. Tyson Wagler was the trigger-man in both cases but it was team play that made it possible. Jacob Ertel was working well down low and his centering pass to Wagler was key to goal number one.

Point number two came in the dying seconds when Wagler’s shot to the net was misplayed by the Wildcat goalie allowing the visitors to double up. It wasn’t a totally one-sided affair as the Wildcats tested net-minder Zack Robinson on three separate occasions but failed to crack his resolve. It was more fast action in the second with both sides moving the puck well but the Huskies were looking better as they got pucks to the Wildcat net. Ertel tallied on the blocker side during a two-on-one rush with Wyatt Rempel taking the assisting credit. Play had hardly resumed when Nic Egli and Josh Potts mounted their own version of the same play coming dangerously close to scoring.

The hosts recovered and succeeded on a late rush to get on the scoreboard but the third frame would prove a disappointment for them. Ertel, who was exemplary all game, found the net on a pad rebound from Matt Sommerville to advance the Husky total. Robinson was again key to the Husky goal differential as he stymied three successive scoring chances and took the wind out of the Wildcat sails. The end-to-end action continued in this game that saw no penalties levied to either club with the finisher coming with less than two minutes remaining. Potts beat the goalie from the slot on a feed from Dale Jurica to take the 5 – 1 win and cement the top slot in regular season.
