The New Hamburg Huskies Minor Peewee A squad
came out of their first tournament of the year, the Garden City Early Bird
Tournament, with some solid experience heading into Tuesday's season
opener.
On Friday, the Huskies started the day with a tie against the Grimsby Peach Kings. Evan Green and Griffin Smith scored for New Hamburg in a 2-2 draw. John Gervais played a great game between the pipes to keep the Huskies close.
The second game in Friday saw the Huskies fall 3-2 to the Waterloo Wolves. Smith and Cody Cowell scored for the Huskies in a heartbreaker as Waterloo scored their third goal with just over a minute remaining.
Saturday morning, the Huskies knocked off the Whitby Wildcats 4-2. After trailing 1-0, the Huskies roared back with three straight tallies -- two by Hunter Mitchell and one for Joey Gibson.
With Whitby scoring a power play goal to inch closer, Mitchell sealed the win with his third of the game to clinch victory. Tyler Clement backstopped the Huskies to the win.
The second Saturday game pitted the Huskies against the Scarborough Ice Raiders, with New Hamburg on the wrong side of a 5-3 decision. Hunter Mitchell (2) and Evan Green scored in a losing effort.
Throughout the tournament, the Huskies showed some of their best hockey to date and look to start the 2014-2015 regular season with some positive momentum at home against the Halton Hills Thunder on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
