Midget LL3's Deadlocked at Home Opener
The Wilhelm Financial Midget Huskies LL3 had been practicing for weeks in anticipation of their home opener against the St. George Generals LL2. As fate would have it, the visitors handed the Dogs the first opportunity when they took a knee penalty early in the first period.

Nathan Gerber got the puck in deep and with help from line mate Dylan Hempey, they kept the General defense off-balance. Gerber finally took control and his centering pass found Wyatt Stone in front where he made no mistake on the power-play. With one point on the board, the Huskies were hungry for more. Less than a minute later, Cam Gingerich added his own unassisted marker when his drive for the net resulted in a misplayed puck by the General’s goalie. Things were going good for the hosts until the General’s went to their own power-play after the Dogs were also cited for kneeing. They drew within a point of the Huskies and began challenging the Dogs for dominance. The second frame was a sparring match that saw Connor Ross and Andrew Just come close on some nice team play. The Generals rebounded and were once again dangerous and net-minder Wyatt Whitby had to be sharp. With no points registered in the second, the opponents pulled out the stops in the third with game play becoming noticeably more physical. Gerber and Colin Shannon were dishing out the hits in the forward zone while Sean Boake was mimicking the example on the back end. The Generals were becoming desperate and frustrated as the clock wound down and found themselves a man short for a head-shot call late in the frame. It looked like the Huskies would pocket the win as they went to the power-play in the last minutes but a mid-ice turnover opened the door for a last ditch drive to the hosts net that succeeded with just 2 seconds remaining. It was a sharp lesson for the Huskies about keeping pucks deep and the 2 – 2 tie will be a reminder about the consequences of not doing so. They hope to improve on that result when they travel to Tavistock on November 1 to do battle with the Titans.
