The Canadian Legion Major Peewee A Huskies were in Milton Saturday November 25 for a late afternoon game that became a desperate fight to stave off defeat. The Winterhawks were keen to avenge an earlier season loss to the Dogs and proved it by bottling up their visitors in their own end for much of the first period. Net-minder Colton Holba was the savior for his team as he refused to allow Milton that all- important first goal.
That
honour went to Jackson Normandeau on the one and only chance his team got in
that period. A turnover in the opposition end allowed him to shoot point blank
into the top shelf to register the only goal of the frame. The Winterhawks were
not deflated and continued the pressure in the second. Holba once again stood
his ground while his team began to counter the challengers. Evan Denison was
first to answer the repeated attacks with a breakaway of his own that came
close. Then it was Greg Yeoman’s turn by denting the goal post with a shot that
almost registered. The back end was also picking up the pace, making the
Winterhawk forwards pay a physical price. Tim Geiger’s sweater number 19 is
likely imprinted on a few of the Milton players that came too close. It was
clear the momentum had shifted in favour of the Huskies in the third as the
lads took the play into the offensive zone with a vengeance. The pressure paid
dividends when a rebound from Josh Blier was swatted in by Joel Domm to double
the Husky tally. More hard work along the boards by Jackson Gerber yielded
another Husky point when his feed to Blier was in turn delivered to the
customer. The Dogs were really hauling the sled at that point and came very
close on breakaways by Josh Beach and Yeoman. The Winterhawks played well, but
the Dogs proved that a hot goalie sometimes makes the difference. Holba kept
his team alive long enough until they found a way to win and for that deserves
the TLC Pet Food player of the game award for the stunning 3 – 0 shutout
victory.
