Husky LL2s Extend Winning Streak
The New Hamburg Huskies Midget LL2s played host on November 15 to their fraternity brothers, the Midget Huskies LL1s. There was a high expectation that this would be a tough, fast-skating contest and those expectations were fully realized.

The LL2s came out flying with Tyler Kumpf, Connor Ross and Josh Potts pressing home concerted attacks on the LL1 net. The pressure did not let up on the line change. Daniel O’Connell opened the scoring on a determined drive to the net unassisted. Mike Thrush added his own marker late in the frame on a pad rebound from Owen Ross. The LL1s were on their heels going into the second as they continued to face a confident and aggressive host. Quick whistles prevented 2 more goals that the LL1s would have suffered but the third was a charm. Scooping a pass from Rhett Miller, Matt Sommerville bolted through the middle and beat the goalie to make it a 3-goal game. More scoring chances followed. Miller put a shot off the post while Kumpf, Connor Ross and Potts came close on a tic-tac-toe play. Just when the LL2s seemed to be in complete control, the visitors woke up. Colton Holba, who was vacationing in net up to that point, was suddenly called on to make 3 consecutive saves. The LL1 pressure continued and a defensive breakdown allowed them to get on the scoreboard in the dying minutes of the period. An LL1 hooking call looked like an opportunity for the hosts but it was quickly dashed when they were levied a head-check call that established 4-on-4 action. Going into the third, the LL2s were down a man and that was the differentiator in the next LL1 goal. The game intensity ratcheted up a notch as the white sweater players retaliated on a sweet passing play. Owen Ross fed Kumpf who was well positioned in front where he made no mistake on the play. The opposition came back hard and Holba was again earning his pay in net before his team returned to the offensive. O’Connell, Sommerville and Miller all had scoring chances but it was Brandon Wagler’s rush to the net that very nearly advanced the score. The LL1s had other ideas and bagged a third goal on another defensive zone breakdown. With time running out, they pulled their goalie to make a last ditch play. It backfired. Miller found the empty net with 26 seconds left on a feed from Owen Ross who registered his third assist on the night. The pain wasn’t over for the LL1s. Thrush, working with Sommerville, got his second goal on a drive to the net in the dying seconds to complete the 6 – 3 victory. The Midget LL2s are enjoying success with 8 straight wins and hope to continue the streak when they face the Woolwich Wildcats LL1 on November 20th
