The John Bear Bantam AE Huskies were looking for a little redemption after dropping the first two games to the Tillsonburg Tornadoes in their first dual of OMHA play-downs. Game one went on Sunday February 29th as they hosted their opposition with high anticipation. The lone goal for the Pack came in the second frame on a short-handed play as Taylor Von Hausen secured a goalie turnover and made it count. Although the Dogs out-played and out-shot their opponent, that doesn’t replace out-scoring and the Huskies were forced to accept the 2 – 1 loss at the end of regulation. Thursday saw the New Hamburg squad in Tillsonburg for game two and once again things started badly. With less than a minute elapsed, the Tornadoes had opened the scoring but the Dogs answered with their own. Filip Telescu potted one on a scrum getting help from Nolan Forster and Marcus Roth. A bench minor saw the Tornadoes take full advantage, restoring their lead. Once again, Von Hausen delivered the equalizer in the second frame but it would be the last for the Huskies. Suffering a Tornado power-play goal late in the second saw the Dogs on the defensive. The final Tillsonburg point came in the third on yet another power-play that the Huskies were unable to answer. It was a humbling 4 – 2 loss that the hometown team had to analyze closely as they were now facing elimination on their own ice on Sunday February 5. Team focus and avoidance of penalties were to be the keys to success if the Huskies wanted to keep their OMHA dreams alive. It was clear that these lessons were learned as the Dogs took to the ice with a vengeance delivering the early pressure so key to setting the tone of the game. The first three shifts set the pattern as Brady Finn, Filip Telescu and Nolan Forster pressed into the forward zone with determination. The efforts paid off at the half when Marcus Roth banged one in from the slot getting help from Matt Schmidt and Connor Ross. A questionable call against the Huskies saw them successfully penalty-killing for 4 minutes. Tanner Green was sharp in net and deflected their best efforts while Husky defensemen Josh Jewitt and Alex Normandeau did their best to keep the puck up ice. It was more hard and fast play in the second which saw the Forster-Telescu tag-team nearly tally on a two-on-one chance. However, it was to be Roth’s night as he secured another Husky goal on a nice feed from Ross to double up the Husky total.  The opposition was not backing down and Green was sorely tested on a breakaway effort but held up under the pressure. It was all hands on deck in the third with those all-important puck battles along the boards being won by Danny Martin, Connor Popham, Jayden Marion, Jakob Windl and Mike Glauser. A mad dash up the middle almost paid off for Austin Dale followed by another by Ross. The boys from Tillsonburg finally answered with one of their own with less than 2 minutes remaining. It was not enough and when the clock ran out, the scoreboard favoured the Huskies in the 2 – 1 decision. It was an astonishing comeback attesting to the value of teamwork that the Huskies will carry with them into Tillsonburg on Thursday February 9 where they hope to even the series.
