Organization - NHHA SEEKING NEW REFEREES
Submitted By Stacey Dineen on Fri 10 22, 21
The New Hamburg Hockey Association is seeking new referees for the 2021-2022 hockey season.

Spots on the roster exist for entry level referees from 15 years of age and up.  Those with previous experience will also be welcomed.

While many people enter the world of refereeing as teenagers, lots of others start refereeing in their 20's, 30's and 40's as their lifestyles adjust and provide time for refereeing.  People start refereeing for many different reasons.  Some younger individuals may see refereeing as a good part time job.  Older individuals often get involved in refereeing as it is good exercise while staying involved in the great game of hockey.  Some others see refereeing as an opportunity to give back to a sport that they reaped the benefits of.

While Hockey Canada allows individuals to start refereeing as young as 14 years of age, the NHHA prefers entry level referees be at least 15 years of age (at December 31).  This because OMHA regulations limit 14 and 15 year olds to U8, U9 and U11 Local League hockey.  It is NHHA’s experience that individuals who have been restricted to those levels for two years lose interest.  The lack of interest then reflects in the effort they put into refereeing, their on-ice performance, and desire to stick with it.  Thus, in addition to having another year of maturity, those who start refereeing at 15 years of age are more likely to enjoy it and stick with it than those that start at 14 years of age.

Those older than 15 years of age can referee games of players up to 2 years younger than their age.  All new referees start at the younger age groups and lower level of competition. Progression to older age groups and higher levels of competition occurs as one gains experience and demonstrates the competencies to referee at those levels.

This year the path for entry level referees involves completing some on-line courses, attending a virtual clinic and passing the national exam.  Many adults will have already completed some of the on-line courses as they are the same as those those required of coaches, trainers, and parents.  Those 15 years of age on December 31 will attend the Level 1 (House League) Clinic.  Those older than 15 years of age on December 31 will attend the Level 2 Entry Level Clinic.  The on-line courses can be done now.  Registration for the clinics will open November 1, 2021.

As there are expenses to starting to referee, NHHA will reimburse new referees half the cost of the entry level clinic and first year registration upon successful completion of the clinic and registration with the OMHA as an Entry Level Referee.  The remainder of those costs will be reimbursed to the individual if they are still active as a New Hamburg referee at December 31 the following hockey season.

Anyone interested in refereeing NHHA hockey in New Hamburg should contact Alex Davidson to let their intentions be known. Alex can be contacted at 519-662-1020 or [email protected].
