Husky LL2 Eke Out Win Over Tavistock
The
New Hamburg Huskies Midget LL2 finally registered their first win at home on
November 2 when they played host to the Tavistock Titans. It was a near-run
thing for the Dogs in a game that was decided by penalty killing, goal tending
and a little bit of luck.
The first frame was trench warfare with both sides getting chances on the power-play. Jamie Rennick was back-stopping between the pipes for the Dogs and he looked sharp as the period came to a close. The second frame would not be easy for the Huskies as they had to kill back-to-back penalties. Defenseman Sean Boake was doing sterling service keeping the opposition away from Rennick with the rest of the team following the example. Upon returning to even strength, Brandon Tracey and Connor Ross came close on a drive to the Tavistock net. Eric Noseworthy mimicked the scoring attempt in the dying seconds of the frame but it remained a scoreless match after two. The Titans went to the power-play early in the third when the Dogs were called for slashing. Rennick was again tested and came up roses with his glove, frustrating the visitors’ attempts. Owen Houle added his own offensive flair on a deadly shot but the Titan goalie was proving equally tough. The break for the Huskies came when Tavi was levied a slashing penalty at the mid-point of the frame. A quick break-out play by Tyler Griffith got the puck to Canden Addley who ripped one from the top of the face-off circle. The rebound was scooped by Damian Naylor who deked the goalie and buried it to break the deadlock. The Dogs nearly doubled up minutes later when Tracey raced in on a breakaway but the Titan goalie was once again proving a tough puzzle to solve. The visitors got their own breakaway chance in the dying seconds and would have tied the contest but with the net knocked off, their goal was ruled invalid. It was their last gasp and the Huskies claimed the 1 – 0 win, their first of the season. They hope to continue the success when they meet another Husky rival, the LL3 squad on November 16.
