MIDGET LL2 SUCCEED IN ST. JACOBS
October 29 saw the New Hamburg Huskies Midget LL2s on the road to St. Jacobs to do battle with the Woolwich Wildcats LL1. The Dogs were looking to add to their win column total after a nice 6 – 2 showing against the Hespeler Shamrocks LL3 the previous weekend

Play had barely begun when the first point was posted. A nice breakout pass from Owen Ross found Alex Wagler rushing the offensive zone. He waited out the goalie and buried the biscuit to draw first blood. The Wildcats regrouped and mounted their own offensive rush. A defensive zone breakdown was all they needed to get to a breakaway scoring opportunity that tied the contest. Now it was the Dog’s turn to tighten up and take the play to enemy territory. Andy Maxwell got the job done on a blistering rush to the net and beat the goalie through the 5-hole to retake the lead. Going into the second frame, the hosts were far from done and with man in the box for tripping, the Huskies were fending off determined Woolwich attackers. Zack Okum was quick with the glove and fended off ugly bounces to keep his team in front. A second Husky penalty for interference was the catalyst for the next Woolwich goal that came on a turnover. It was a wakeup call to the Dogs as they regrouped going into the third. Opportunity came knocking when the Wildcats were called for holding. The Husky power play got down to business and the cycling plays were more than the hosts could handle. Wagler bagged his second point on a rush to the net as the goalie misread the play. The seesaw battles weren’t over and the physicality of the game found new levels as Woolwich tried to turn the tables. The contest was retied on a rebound shot that the Pack quickly responded to. Wagler rushed end-to-end and deked the goalie to secure a hat trick on the night and re-establish the lead for his team. As the clock wound down, both sides were sending players to the box forcing the coaches to re-arrange their benches. Okum was sorely tested in the dying minutes but fended off the Woolwich attacks to secure the 4 – 3 win for his team.
